Hitsugaya used to be the smaller one. The weaker one. And he would run after Hinamori, his small child's stride barely keeping up while she walked. However when she noticed him she would stop and kneel back on her heels, pulling him into a warm hug. And Hitsugaya would throw skinny arms around her neck, burying his face in her hair. She always smelled like peaches. He loved peaches. Then she would stand and reach down to hold his hand, their fingers intertwining. Her smile was always so warm and Hitsugaya never could help but grin back.

Then they grew older and Hitsugaya didn't have to run to catch up anymore. Hinamori didn't have to stop and open her arms for him. They no longer held hands. Hitsugaya missed it, even if he remained silent and said nothing as they walked side by side. Then she began to go to school and Hitsugaya had to stand by the door and watch her leave, a sullen expression on his face. It hurt, watching her walk away and unable to follow. And they began to spend less time together as she was suddenly thrown into her studies. Hitsugaya couldn't stop her. Couldn't make her stay. So there was only one option, and that was to follow her again.

Hitsugaya became one of the youngest in the school. Unfortunately Hinamori was ahead of him in classes so they rarely caught sight of each other. But they would walk to school together. And when Hitsugaya left for home Hinamori would be standing by the doorway, that warm smile playing on her lips. Hitsugaya could stop himself from grinning back now, but his face would soften. And she knew he was happy to see him.

Hinamori looked weak, but Hitsugaya was one of the few people that knew better. When he was bullied as a small child she was merciless when she came to protect him. Nobody attempted it after she had first blown the first boys away, the broomstick in her hand her only weapon. However Captain Aizen seemed to have noticed it as well. She became second captain of the 5th division. And Hitsugaya watched as she moved further away from him. As he had always had, how could he do nothing else but follow?

It was like he was a child again, following her, small strides barely keeping up. This time Hinamori never stopped for him. Hitsugaya's hands became raw and callous from constant practice with his sword. His body cut and bleeding from the difficult missions he risked. He was running now. To catch up to her. To remain by her side.

Hitsugaya caught up. He surpassed her. Captain of the 10th division, his vice-captain Rangiku supporting him. And suddenly he realized he was the stronger one now. HInamori was running to catch up to him. And Hitsugaya wasn't really sure what to do with the sudden change. But he knew that with this power it was his turn to protect her. And sometimes they would pass each other on the hallway and she would smile, even if he didn't return it. But when she passed him, the scent of peaches from her hair, he would reach out and brush his fingers with hers.
