Summary: For
hyourinmaru. When Momo met Shirou-chan :P
There was a small line of bushes near their house that grew berries in the warm weather. Momo loved picking them almost as much as eating them, her tiny hands careful around the stiff pricking of the leaves, flicking off heavy berries as they hung like blood waiting to drop. Bachan (they weren’t really related, but she seemed like a grandmother to Momo) didn’t like the little girl going off on her own, even if it were just to the berry line, but Momo- adventurous and optimistic as she was –didn’t see any harm in it.
Holding out a gold of her yukata, Momo let each berry gently roll into the fabric bowl, watching them jostle and then reached out for another. Her ‘bowl’ was half filled when she reached for another berry and paused. The strange red berries she had been looking at, she realized, were eyes! Someone was peering (glaring, actually) at her through the tight thicket of leaves.
Careful not to smush her berries, Momo crouched closer. “Hello.” She told the eyes. They didn’t move but a rustling suggested they tried to. They must’ve had just enough room in the bush to squeeze in. “Don’t the leave hurt?” She asked. The eyes told her nothing. “My name is Momo. What’s yours?”
“…”
Undeterred she took a handful of berried from her yukata. “Are you hungry?”
The eyes narrowed and Momo realized the bush was full of them. “Well, berries aren’t very filling. I could ask Bachan to make extra for lunch. Are you hungry?”
Those eyes looked at her strangely and Momo giggled nervously. “Bachan thinks it’s weird because I like to eat, even though I don’t have to. Do you like to eat?”
The eyes lowered slightly and a soft voice said, “ ‘M hungry….”
Happy at the response, Momo beamed. “Don’t worry, we can get you good! C’mon, follow me.” She said holding out her hand. The eyes widened almost in fear but she insisted. “You can’t eat inside a bush. I won’t hurt you.”
Hesitantly the eyes complied and Momo was surprised to see a hand, far more colorless than her own pale hand, grabbing fearfully at her fingers. They were tiny, scraped and pudgy, coated with grim and flecks of dried blood. Following it was a tiny boy, skin and hair- underneath the dirt –the color of a clean white sheet. He looked to be a few years younger than her.
“So,” she asked again, “what’s your name?”
The tiny boy shrugged, looking at her fingers dark in his white grasp and fretted, but said nothing.
“Okay,” Momo said, “if you don’t have a name, I’ll give you one.” Tugging at his hand she led the boy to her small home, the other hand rolling the berries in their makeshift bowl. “Bachan!” She called into the cottage. “Can I have a friend over for lunch? His name is Shiro-chan!”
The boy scowled at the name. That definitely had to go.

A/N: I know Hitsugaya’s name is Toushirou and in the sidestory Hinamori calls him ShiroU-chan, but I would guess she’d call him ‘Shiro’ which means white until he came up with a name of his own. Also with Hitsugaya being a young genius, as well as Hinamori (asides from Yachiru, she’s got to be the youngest vice-captain) they must have a high spiritual level which means (according to dosetsu) they have to eat, which would seem strange to those that don’t have such a level. I like information^-^
