AROUND THE DINNER TABLEby rukia
She would have loved to see them now. They were so special to her.

"Brother, do you really need to have another serving?" Yuzu frowned as Ichigo put his dirty dishes away and pick up a tray. "You ate so much already!"

"Midnight snack," He said over his shoulder as he spooned miso soup into a clean bowl and popped open the rice cooker.

I never thought I would be cut out for this kind of life. I knew that even before we were married. I was just a hot-headed med student and she... she was a special person. More special than I knew at the time.

"Ichi, you gonna eat that?" Karin said from the opposite side of the table, pointing at the grilled mackerel he had on his tray.

"Yeah, so quit eyeing it!" Ichigo snapped and turned to spare a warning glance at me, "Don't even think about it, old man."

When our son was born, I could see what she meant. He was special, just like her. He had a destiny greater than mine... but isn't any parent just a bit player in their child's life?

"Who me? How dare you accuse your poor father!" I stuck my lip out in a defensive pout. Ichigo and Karin traded looks which clearly said, 'he's doing it again'.

She had told me all about the power in her blood, the responsibility she had to take. I was so in love with her that I wanted to be a part of that. I just didn't know at the time that I had to play my part without her.

In a fit of emotion, I leaped across the room and embraced Masaki's glossy 30x50 portrait, "Oh, my love, our children don't realize how special they are to me~!"

Indeed, she once said that they have to recognize their destiny on their own. I'm just a bit player in their lives.

"Somebody hose him down," Ichigo took his full tray and headed upstairs. "I'm going to bed."

It's the first Kurosaki Isshin fanfic ever! (maybe) :P

It's not much for a drabble, but I just wanted a way to point out that the ghost-seeing ability that his children have probably didn't come from his side of the family. ^_^;

back?
